Section 508 Compliance

Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 as amended is a set of standards requiring Federal agencies to make their information and communications technologies (ICT) accessible to employees and members of the public who have disabilities in a comparable manner to the access experienced by employees and members of the public without disabilities.

The revised Section 508 Standards apply to ICT which is "procured, developed, maintained or used" by agencies of the Federal government. Section 508 was enacted to eliminate barriers to ICT, make opportunities available for persons with disabilities and encourage development of technologies to achieve these goals.

Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG)

Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) are technical guidelines designed to measure digital accessibility. WCAG 2.1 A & AA is the current technical standard used to measure Section 508 compliance. Criterion's manual and automated WCAG 2.1 testing solutions provide our clients with comprehensive and detailed website accessibility reporting.  Additionally, we empower our clients to maintain their Section 508 compliance initiatives long-term by fostering knowledge transfer, providing award-winning training, technical support, VPAT documentation and monitoring!
Our Section 508 compliance solutions start at $16,500 and include the following premium services:

  1. Manual Section 508 Accessibility Testing

Four of our expert WCAG auditors, including end-users with disabilities and a senior applications developer, will test all unique web pages (not just a small sample) and upload test results to our custom portal for client access.

Assistive technologies utilized during website accessibility testing:

    • Screen Readers & Magnifiers
    • Color Contrast Analyzers
    • Speech to Text and Text to Speech Software
    • Keyboard Only and Alternative Keyboard Devices
    • Source Code Analysis
  2. Automated Section 508 Accessibility Testing

We will conduct automated website accessibility testing using the industry ’s leading WCAG testing software!  Note: Both human judgment and assistive technologies are required to test the majority of WCAG guidelines. Website accessibility testing software and plugins often produce false or misleading results and alone cannot determine Section 508 compliance.

  3. WCAG Training Courses

Our award-winning WCAG training courses are written by our web accessibility subject-matter experts and designed to provide clients with the knowledge they need to create and maintain Section 508 compliant websites, applications, mobile apps and PDF documents.

Available Section 508 compliance training courses include:

    • “Introduction - Understanding Web Accessibility”
    • “Introduction - Designing for Web Accessibility”
    • “Advanced - WCAG Testing & Repair Techniques”
    • “Advanced - Mobile Accessibility Testing & Repair Techniques”
    • “Advanced - PDF Accessibility Testing & Repair”
    • “Advanced - Creating Accessible Word Documents”

  5. Section 508 Technical Support

Our team of expert application developers provide your project team with Section 508 technical support and troubleshooting throughout the remediation process.

  6. Section 508 Compliance Documentation

Upon project completion, we provide the following Section 508 documentation:

    • Online Website Accessibility Statement
    • Voluntary Product Accessibility Template (VPAT)
    • Vendor WCAG Compliance Statement

Mobile Accessibility

Due to accessibility and assistive technology limitations of mobile devices and operating systems, mobile accessibility testing is distinctly different from website accessibility testing. Our mobile team will ensure your mobile apps meet both WCAG and Section 508 requirements.

Mobile accessibility testing solutions include:

  • Native iOS & Android WCAG Testing
  • Responsive WCAG Testing
  • Hybrid Apps WCAG Testing
  • Online Mobile Accessibility Training

PDF Accessibility

Creating accessible PDFs is more complicated than simply using automated accessibility checks built into Adobe and Microsoft Word. Our PDF accessibility experts will also manually test and repair issues with color contrast, properties, image placement, table formatting, heading styles, nesting, bulleted and numbered lists, spacing, hyperlinks, logical reading order, and more! Without these repairs, users of assistive technologies may interpret the document in the wrong order, without important graphics or in a format too confusing for the end-user to comprehend.

We provide WCAG and Section 508 compliant PDF accessibility services on over 1 million pages of documentation each year! Count on us for fast and accurate PDF accessibility testing and repairs!

Our WCAG and Section 508 PDF accessibility services include:

  • PDF Accessibility Testing & Repair
  • Online PDF Accessibility Training
