Section 508 Compliance
In 1998 the US Congress amended the Rehabilitation Act to require Federal agencies to make their electronic and information technology accessible to people with disabilities. Section 508 was enacted to eliminate barriers in information and communications technologies (ICT), to make available new opportunities for people with disabilities, and to encourage development of ICT that will help achieve these goals. The law applies to all Federal agencies when they develop, procure, maintain, or use ICT. Under Section 508 (29 U.S.C. § 794d), agencies must give employees with disabilities and members of the public access to information that is comparable to the access available to others.
Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG)
Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) are technical guidelines referenced when testing website, applications and PDF documents for Section 508 compliance. Today, WCAG 2.1 A & AA is considered the minimum standard for Section 508 compliance.
During the past 20 years, Criterion has assisted more than 2,000 government agencies and contractors to obtain long-term Section 508 compliance via our premium Section 508 compliance services. Criterion offers Section 508 testing from a “real world” perspective by including expert WCAG testers with disabilities on every audit team. At Criterion, we believe the best way to ensure your website, application, mobile apps, and PDF documents are Section 508 compliant is to ask our experts with disabilities!
Manual Accessibility Testing vs. Automated Accessibility Testing
Did you know automated accessibility testing can only capture 17% to 19% of WCAG guideline failures?
During the past 20 years, Criterion has provided our clients with the most rigorous WCAG testing available because we specialize in manual accessibility testing by both experts with disabilities and the industry’s foremost WCAG web developers! As a result, our clients have significantly reduced their exposure to future legal liabilities associated non-compliant websites or applications.
